On Sunday, 17th August 2025, the Nigerian Community in Northern Ireland (NICONI) hosted an enlightening session on Bystander Intervention in cases of Violence Against Women and Girls, in line with the wider campaign by the Executive Office to end violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland.

The event, which took place at the Ballynafeigh Community Development Association (BDCA) premises in Ormeau road, was facilitated by Sarah Stack and Helen Crickard from the Women’s Resource and Development Agency (WRDA), an organisation with a mission to advance women’s equality and participation in society.

The facilitators brought to light the effect of gender based violence in not just Northern Ireland but the wider society at large, and how members of the community can intervene without further escalating the situation, thereby becoming a part of the solution.

Participants left the event with a greater awareness of the roles everyone can play in ending violence against women and girls, thereby creating a safer, more informed and aware community.

This event was supported by The Executive Office Northern Ireland and the Belfast City Council.

Together, we are raising voices, breaking the silence, and raising hope.
